All About Our Classroom

Class Rules & Behavior Plan

Our school has three rules:

1. Respect

2. Responsibility

3. Best Effort

Our school uses a district wide behavior program.  Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) has been adopted in our district to create a matrix of expectations that are uniform across all grade levels.  PBS is a 3-tier systematic approach to address discipline and behavior in a way that is both positive and proactive.  When students demonstrate any of the three rules, they will be given a “paw print pride ticket.”  This ticket will be used to reinforce good behavior.  There will be monthly paw print pride parties and raffles to honor students that receive them.

In our classroom, we incorporate PBS through a behavior incentive system called: ClassDojo

We also have a class marble jar for good behavior.  This demonstrates how each good behavior adds up for something wonderful.  When the jar is filled we have a class “marble jar party” to celebrate our accomplishments. Kids love earning marbles!

Grading:

Your child will be graded in all academic subjects, social behaviors, and developmental skills.  Homework is checked and recorded.  If your child receives a paper with “fix” on it, please review the paper and help your child make corrections.  “Fix” papers should be returned to school.  Papers with a "smiley face" on top means that we completed it together as a class. Papers with a "star" means that it was checked for completion.  Please note that not all papers will have a grade.  In second grade we do a lot of learning activities.

Homework:

Homework is important because it reinforces the skills that are learned in the classroom.  I generally give homework almost every school night unless a special after school function is going on.  Homework is checked in, so please make sure your child’s homework is completed each night and brought back to school the next day.  I strongly encourage you to help your child return their homework on time.  Late assignments will be accepted.  If a child cannot complete homework due to a family emergency, please send me a note.  Your child will mostly receive homework in reading, math, and spelling.  Students that do not finish class work during the given time may have their work sent home for homework.

I also encourage each child to read for at least 20 minutes, 4 days a week.  The more your child reads the better reader he/she will become.

The more you work with your child at home, the more successful they will be in school.  It is a good idea to have addition and subtraction flashcards at home to quiz your child.  This will greatly help students succeed at math fluency.

Absences:

If your child is absent, please contact the health office.  If your child misses more than one day, please send someone to pick up his/her mail and homework.  It is helpful to leave me a voicemail or email to let me know if homework will be picked up.  This will make sure that I have all materials gathered and sent down to the office or another sibling in the school.  Also, please be on time.  I don’t want your child to miss important morning assignments.  It is also very distracting if a child comes in late because we usually have to stop what we are doing.  Thank you.

Conferences:

Official conferences take place on November 9, 2017 and January 25, 2017.  The purpose of the conferences is to discuss and review your child’s report card and behavior.  Your scheduled time will be sent home a few weeks prior to conferences.

Snack

To keep our bodies and brains energized, students may bring a healthy snack.  (Ex: fruit, veggies, crackers, granola bar, fruit snacks trail mix, etc.)  Nothing messy please!  Water bottles will also be allowed as long as they do not become a distraction.

Birthdays:

Children are encouraged to share their excitement of their birthday!  Our school has a rule that no unhealthy food can be passed out on birthdays.  Instead, they may pass out healthy snacks, pencils, stickers, party favors, etc.  If your child has a summer birthday, you may celebrate on your child’s half birthday.  Another way to celebrate is to donate a book to our classroom library.  Inside the book, write a message that dedicates the book in honor of your child.
